By buying a cert together Adito will be alive much longer!
Please see this post to understand and how to donate!

Warning: This version is based on original binary release and contains several bugs. Please use the SVN version instead!

The installer uses the NSIS-installer, thanks a lot for this guys!

  • Java Runtime Enviroment v1.7.0 or older! (Note that Java v1.8.0 is not supported)

Read changes needed for version Java v1.7.0!

  • 25-30MB of space

  • Little network & config knowledge

Download installer

Note: The installer contains tools.jar so the required JDK isn’t needed for installation. Pretty stupid with a 65MB installation just to get this 12MB file

If you are looking for the Adito SVN-version, download here

Step-by-step guides

For the guide on how to install it, read below!

For a guide to set up RDP to your Adito server, check here

Download NSIS Installerscript – developers only

I finally got around to release the OpenVPN-ALS (Adito) installerscript!

Download it here (21,6MB)

If you are use the Installer script, here is the deal:

* I want to be credited, linked back here…

* You publish the new installer web references here!

* I’ll add it to the page so others can play around with your release!

That would be great for the community, and probably fix a bug or two for those who problems installing this πŸ™‚

  1. Download & Install NSIS

  2. Extract “Includes to NSIS.rar” to %programfiles%NSISInclude

  3. Use a decent NSIS Editor, like HM NIS Edit (It does have a simple, but good, IDE!)

  4. Play around in the AditoInstaller.nsi file to see what it does

  5. When you are stuck use NSIS Docs and Wiki

Don’t cry when you mess up, redo!

I don’t know anything at the moment, use the comments-field

It will remove EVERYTHING! Please use with caution especially after you customize.

I have successfully reinstalled above the old version without problems so if you are upgrading, stop the service/console and just install above the old one.

Also check out this wiki on how to make a copy of your config

  1. Lars,

This is brilliant, works like a charm, just what Adito, non-technical windows users need! (it opens Adito up to the masses!)

I’m generally intrested in learnig about installers such as NSIS for another java based implementation. Could you possibly send me the NSIS script used to create the Adito installer, I could learn a lot from it and would like to create the installer in my development, (virtual), environment as Apache Ant and the build.xml just numbed my mind!

Kind regards & thanks for your time

  2. Can this installer upgrade an SSL Explorer RC16 installation? Or do I have to reconfigure everything from scratch?

  3. Steve:
No sorry, SSL Explorer and Adito are two seperate products now. Usally you got the SSL Explorer Enterprise installed and the Adito is based on SSL Explorer Community.

You should install it in another directory and copy the extensions have over to the new adito installation. Users, tunnels, ect needs to be setup again.

  4. Awesome! Thanks alot Lars.

Just used it on my windows 7, and it works nice. But do you remember where the proper remote desktop package has gone. The java rdp doesnt cut it for me, and when I was running vista I found the package for using the native RDP tool in windows for it..Buut alas, I cant find it anywhere now πŸ™

  5. Edmund:
Just to inform others, check out the forum-thread:
    Direct download is

Personally I prefer the totaly independent plugin:
This will work on every windows system you run this on. Even if people have blocked/removed mstsc.exe you’ll get connected πŸ™‚

  6. It is wonderfull work!!

Could you possibly send me the NSIS script used to create the Adito installer, I could learn a lot from it and would like to create the installer in my development.

    Thanks in advance!

  7. at first thanks to Lars. Installation works fine.

    I have an administration problem.
When i open extension manager and click to one extension a new website opens (localhost) and nothing else happens.

    can anybody help me?

  8. Has anyone tried this on a Windows 2008 server running AD in native 2008 mode (apart from me). I cant seem get a connection to the AD. I have two separate machines 2008 and 2003 (both with separate AD) and when connected to the 2003 server it works like a charm. But when running on the 2008 server it says “User database could not be opened. Internal error.” =(

Cant seem to find any information about this issue.

  9. The installer worked flawlessly on Windows 2003 SP2, Windows 2000 Server, and even on Windows XP Pro. Thanks for all your time and effort. I’ve installed this using the ant compiler on Windows, as well as running a Debian install on a Ubuntu Server, and this is definitely the simplest install to date. Thanks again.

  10. Thanks so much! I delayed and delayed promises to a business friend on installing SSL explorer on their server, only to find Baracuda stole it!! Adito is a life saver and your instructions even more. Thanks again for your efforts.

  11. Stupid mistake by me on that one πŸ˜‰

Download the again (clear browser cache, everything named sslexplorer shall be renamed to adito πŸ™‚

If you want to fix it the version you already have, open the extension.xml, search&replace sslexplorer- with adito- then rename the directory in the archive to adito.

Please report back if it works, I have the “sslexplorer” version installed on the server atm.

  12. Erik:
No, they don’t work so well because of the enterprise / community differences. But simple plugins like this one works 100% πŸ™‚
Personally I use Adito just for RDP anywhere, hehe

  13. Hi, Great installer, would you be willing to share the Nullsoft install script?
I would like to update it to the SVN version.

    Thanks, Joe

  14. Hi, thanks for installer, worked perfect. I can now connect to my server on my lan. I wonder how I can connet to server using a tunnel and vnc. Is that possible? If yes, do you or somb. have a guide?

The reason is that i need access to my server when on work, all company backup is on this server. I know that i can share disks, but i prefer to use a sligthly better gui.

  15. Hanniha:
Sorry no… I don’t usally work with java and don’t have the compilator needed for the job. My “deal” is to release new installer versjons when the adito/openvpn-als team releases a new public release.

  16. I need some help establishing a ssl certificate. Each time I generate a csr it has localhost in the common name. What do I need to do?

  17. bro, after step #6 above my browser didn’t open any page..

and when start the service, it always give me error:

    The Adito service is starting…….
The Adito service could not be started.

    A system error has occurred.

    System error 1067 has occurred.

    The process terminated unexpectedly.

Press any key to continue . . .

  18. large, this Adito version similar to SSL Explorer Community edition..

do you Adito version that similar to SSL Explorer Enterprise Edition??
i’d like to try the Network Extension menu in enterprise edition πŸ™‚

  19. I didn’t make the software just the installer. Adito is a fork from the SSL Explorer Community source and they are constantly working on it.
The progress of development stopped when the OpenVPN-guys took over, but we are still waiting for a new public release.

To check out the latest release, use SVN and download & compile the latest source.

  20. Thanks for the RDP. Works great. Where’s the best source to keep up to date with extensions ? Or how can we make them ?

  21. Ram:
You can make them! Check out the post

Download the WinUtil to see the basic configuration of a really simple extension.

To advance check out the FireFox Portable package, it will open a SOCKS proxy etc…

There is a extension respo, but it is empty/offline atm. The latest SVN updates the respo to a new location, so we’ll have to wait and see what Mattoc will do.

  22. “Redirect disk drives” under local resources, what does that do exactly ? Sorry my question might be silly. Thank again for all the info.

  23. large, i found installer for SSL-Explorer Enterprise Edition (similar to Adito), but it needs license file to activate the free version.
    do u have one?

  24. Is this VPN software? Can you make user accounts for it an run it off a regular linux server? This stuff is so confusing.

  25. mark:
Take your time and check out the Hak5-introduction of OpenVPN-ALS.
You can make users and run it off an Linux server, but since it was made with java it also run on Windows. That is where my installer comes in…

OpenVPN-ALS is a webbased VPN-system that doesn’t require a client, only the javaruntime (on the server & client) and works a little different than traditional VPN client/server systems that you might be familiar with.

  26. Hello Lars, Did you ever get to creating an installer for the SVN files?

Something must have happend during the last year since the files was uploaded to sourceforge πŸ˜€

  27. Thanks for all the hard work, just curious if you ever had any feedback if some other has created a SVN installer πŸ™‚

I have googled for it but not really found any.

  28. Frederic:
It has been quiet like a desert after the release of the installer script…

Should be pretty fear to setup a automated SVN script, based on the installer script, but nobody has stepped up.

People should read about the future of the OpenVPN ALS project:

I fully understand Mattock that have, at his best, driven the project ahead and not getting the response he need.

The option “Cut down complexity by at least 80% by removing all but the most essential functionality. This might enable the project to be fully community-driven. ” would be the best for me. If a simple API is provided alot of plugins could be made and still keep the “core-programmers” in action with user donations.

  29. first thank you for this grate show πŸ˜‰
might be silly but sorry i am just a beginner
this needs a static ip ,&what if i connect through a router ?!!
    how can i solve this

i’m sure that i’m missing something here so please explain it for me

  30. @sweiss: You can use one of the following services to track your dynamic IP:

These services give you a Static DNS on the web that directs to your Dynamic IP at home. Your Dynamic IP is regularly checked for any changes and is updated when it does.

Then you simply point your browser to (PS. https:// is port 443)to access Adito/OpenVPS-ALS.

This setup is very useful for all types of connections to a Dynamic IP. For example I also have a Real VNC server that serves a Java applet for VNC on port 5800 so I simply type hhtp:// into internet browser and I get a can VNC session into home PC!

  31. Does anyone know how to include an entire folder as part of the extension.xml section?

    I have tried:

and neither has worked and cause a checksum error when uploaded to SSL-Explorer. I want to include the whole folder rather than grab individual files within because some of the files in the folder are dynamically created after using the program on the server machine.

  32. Great installer. Installed fine on my 2003 Term Server box. Now just trying to figure out how to use it with RDP.

Going to WIki and will start reading.

    – Lou

  33. Hello. I had this working and then goofed… So I re-installed and now am having trouble getting RDP to work again. Got the internal website re-direct going so I can deliver intranet and some internal apps. RDP works fine when I test internally with XP, not on VISTA. On an external connection issues persist with RDP. I am going to open up the extension zip files and have a look. Otherwise, this is a great app that I plan to use for remote admin access.

  34. I am running Adito on a Win2003 server. All is working very well. I was hoping to use for an SSL cert for my OpenVPN-ALS/Adito m, but GoDaddy needs a CSR of 2048 bits and Adito’s CSR is 1024 bits? Is there away to get a 2048 bit CSR generated?

    – Lou

  35. Thanks for your work!
Found this via a recommendation on youtube by “Hak5Darren”.
I´ll try this within the next days and leave another comment.

Best regards from germany to norway.

  36. Hello:
First of all, thank you for this installer. It works great in my w2003 server. I have found the way to change default adito agent timeout and want to share this information.

To modify the timeout of the adito agent tunnel activity you have to change 2 properties which are located inside the
file C:\program files\Adito\webapp\WEB-INF\lib\adito-webapp.jar. Before doing anything it is recommended to
make a backup of this file in a safe place, just in case.

To modify the adito agent timeout:
    1) stop adito service
    2) Uncompress C:\program files\Adito\webapp\WEB-INF\lib\adito-webapp.jar
    3) Locate file META-FILE\profileProperties-definitions.xml inside the uncompressed folder
    4) Open it with wordpad and change the following definitions:

  37. 4) Open it with wordpad and change the following definitions:
    definition type=”7″ name=”client.tunnel.inactivity” typeMeta=”s”
    category=”10″ defaultValue=”10800000″ visibility=”1″ sortOrder=”65″

    definition type=”1″ name=”webServer.sessionInactivityTimeout”
    typeMeta=”” category=”70″ defaultValue=”180″ visibility=”1″

In this case I have increased the timeout to 3 hours. Note that in client.tunnel.inactivity time is set in milliseconds, whereas in webServer.sessionInactivityTimeout time is set in minutes.
    5) Compress the adito-webapp folder in zip format and name it as adito-webapp.jar
    6) Change the old adito-webapp.jar file in the original location with the new one.
    6) start adito service

  38. This crap is saying that java.exe is not recognized as an internal or external command.

    Windows 2008 r2 , java 1.6

  39. Paco:
    Thnx for the tip! πŸ™‚

Try to open a commandprompt and type java.exe if it shows:
    Usage: java [-options] class [args…]
    (to execute a class)

Then Java is installed correctly, if not reinstall java. Make sure that java-install and adito-install is running as administrator…

  40. Hi Friends,

new to Adito VPN – have setup up Adito on Windows – trying to host file shares -can anyone help with documents –

  41. During installation on Windows 2008 Server R2, the Finish button on “Step 6 – Summary” screen doesn’t work correctly. Instead of completing the installtion, the summary screen is loaded again and the form’s buttons don’t respond to mouse clicks.

    Have you come across this?

    1. Hi Alan

I’ve never heard of it before…
The summary screen doesn’t do much, so I guess killing the installation there should work.

I don’t have a W2k8 server to test it on, so I dunno what is wrong.

    2. Same issue… on W2K8 R2… apparently this is caused by IE9.

Switch it to compatibility mode and it works fine.

BTW… before I could install I had to install Java 6 32bit… apparently it doesn’t recognize the 64 bit version (while this works fine with other Java programs).

      1. Soon I’ll have a virtual machine to test on…
Is it hanging while its in the browser?

The installer doesn’t really check for 64-bit, I’ll have to add it to my todo-list on that one.
I guess if you uninstall 32-bit java afterwards, it still works fine?

        1. Yes, it hangs while in the browser (the Finish button doesn’t react). I don’t think you need a virtual machine to test, just install IE 9 and you’ll probably have the issue. It’s not related to 2008 itself.

          I’ll uninstall Java 32 bit to test…

        2. I uninstalled Java 32bit which resulted in a failure to start the service again, however this was easily fixed by chaning the wrapper.conf file to point to the correct JRE.

  42. Hi all, i have tried Setup Adito in window XP at internal network and apparently almost all function is ok except web forward. After that i setup another Adito at my Public DMZ zone in Suse as requested by my boss using same configuration except i am not using Proxy since i locate it in DMZ zone. but this time no matter how i configure it, Adito agent keep on failed connect. its not sync and it make almost all the function is not accessible.

    1. Hi Charles
I don’t have any experience with Adito in Suse.

But it might be something with the DNS (reverse) queries?
In these cases I only use the ip to connect to and then it works OK…
Sometimes it only works from the internet, because of the DMZ-rules etc, many config options though.
Here is a thread with similar problems:

The timeout error is typical error saying that the client did not get response in a given time.
Usually errors is that a host that cannot be found or route to host isn’t established.

Try connecting with telnet directly to 443, then run a route to check if there is something between blocking.

  43. adito-0.9.1 and your reverse Proxy patch to the Agent.
Works Great on RHEL6 with a little tweaking to Apache.
A solution ahead of its time.
Are you still actively involved in this.
Seems like most 9 to 5’ers have moved on to other jobs, but it does fit
a need with our customers. I am having some issues with Win7 Clients, but I figure I will have resolved
before end of week. Overall your Patches and Contributions have been extremely Valuable to my efforts.

    1. Hi Jeff.

I’ve never actually “worked” on the Adito project.
My contribution was the installer for windows part of it.
But since the OpenVPN-guys took over the project, it was left “dead”.
As you can see no SVN-activity for 15 months:

If you patch/fix or see tips that others might need; please post them here.
If you add new extension for people to use, please send me an e-mail and I’ll add it software “store”.

  44. Lars,

I just found your site when looking for SSL-Explorer – thanks for wrapping up all the hard work πŸ™‚

It looks like even the Adito project and OpenVPN-ALS project material is pretty dead, and 3SP is gone.

Do you know if Adito should work with Active Directory? I’m assuming it does since it hasn’t been stripped out, however, when trying to configure it on “Step 2 – Configure User Database” I get an error in the top right: “User database could not be opened. Internal Error”. Any chance anyone knows what this is? I’ve tried on the options tab setting Service Authentication type to default (GSS-API) and Simple with LDAP string, neither work.

    1. Hi Andy

The 3SP was bought by Barracuda and they offer SSL Explorer Enterprise (in new wrapping) through their solution, closed source of course.

The Adito/OpenVPN-ALS is a branch of the SSL Explorer Community and do have support Active Directory.
I don’t use it myself, so I don’t have first hand info on it, but others got it to work.

First of all you should ensure that the Active Directory works as it should.
A LDAP “tester” can be used for that:

As for the config and different options related to them, check out the Adminguide for SSL Explorer:

      Other tips is time-sync:

On this setup they actually use Active directory: (Google Translate is your friend)

Please let us know how it goes πŸ™‚

  45. Lars, thank you so much for your effort creating this installer. Saves the rest of us a lot of time.
    Greetings from London.

  46. Anyone get this to work in Server 2008 R2? When I run the installer it goes through all the steps but I never get the option to run as a service. After closing the web browser portion of the install the main installer window hangs. Any help appreciated.

    1. Hi, could you provide some more info:
      Windows 2008 server R2 is it 32 og 64-bit?
Have you installed JRE 7 32-bit (it is the default one on
Do you run the installer as administrator?
When Adito installer web-installation part was finished, did you wait the seconds and press the “Exit installer” on the web page, or did you just close the browser?

      1. I was able to get the installer to run properly, the problem was due to IE9 and was mentioned in some earlier comments.

The problem I am having now is that the Agent will not run on a Windows 7 x64 client. I found a reference to this problem in another discussion thread on your blog –

The error is “Γ’??ERROR RegisterClientSynchronizationAction Γ’?? Registration of agent did not occur when the specified timeout of 60000msΓ’?. Has anyone found a solution to this? Thanks.

        1. I run the Adito client on my Windows 7 x64 computer without any problem.
Installed version is the 32-runtime and 64-bit for development (Android / Eclipse):
          java version “1.7.0_17”
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.7.0_17-b02)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 23.7-b01, mixed mode)

If the client has problems connecting there are some issued to check:
          1. DNS might fail, use directly IP to check if that works
          2. If you are connecting through a proxy it will not be detected correctly if a PAC-script is used ( )
          3. Try to disable UAC on the device you are running on, to check if that works.

I think that this error is a typical “connection could not be established” type, and if you are using a proxy it can be blocked.

Give me feedback when you have tried the 3 options.

          Cheers. Lars

          1. To get around this error, try installing Java 1.6 (aka 6u45) installing adito, configuring adito (able to login from https://localhost, not the private ip address)

then uninstall Java 1.6, and install Java 1.7 (aka java 7) to have the latest java runtime instead of running an older version of java.

When adito is being built, it’s looking for class files versioned in java 1.6 but it will run with java 1.7 after configuration.

maybe an update to the installer will address this?

          2. I tried the installer on a clean WinXP installation, with Java 1.7 installed.
That worked as expected, but I’ll try on a Win7 X64 installation to see what happens.
The installer does only use the tools.jar from the Java SDK 1.6 but that works backwards as far as I know.

  47. Hi Lars,
first of all, imho you did a great work, cause Adito is really incredible idea
and I would be very sad if there is no way to use it under windows server πŸ™‚

Anyway, I would want to use it under Win2008R2 I get this error when Adito service try to start :

The Adito service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 1 time(s).

    Can you help me ?

    1. Hi Frederico,

First of all: I didn’t create Adito.
I created the installer for Windows for more easy implementation.

I have not any experience running Adito on Win2k8, but here are some tips that you should check:
      1. Check that you have the 32-bits version of Java-installed and that it has setup the PATH for it (reboot required). Meaning that you should be able to run java.exe from anywhere in the console. “Java.exe -version” should provide the info you need.
      2. Run the installer as Administrator or with admin-rights.
      3. Use the “Run with java” option from the start-menu if the service fails.
      4. Then try to run it with the launcher, if that fails paste the start of the error here.

I’ll probably will setup an VM to check W2k8 one day, but as for now this is theory πŸ˜‰

      Regards. Lars

      1. Hi Lars,

yes I know you did not create Adito πŸ™‚

I wanted to say about windows installer anyway.

        Now :

        – 1 yes, is 32 bit version and path is ok
        – 2 yes installed like Admin
        – 3 Run with java gives no error :
        C:\Program Files (x86)\Adito>RunWithJava.bat
Starting Adito (press CTRL-C or close window to terminate)
Stop Adito-service if you are checking for errors…
Press any key to continue . . .

But also I don’t see nothing listening on 443 port and also
doing a https://localhost, of course, I don’t reach configuration web page

        Any other hint ?

Is here some user who ruled installation under Win2008R2 ?

        Many thanks

        1. Hi Frederico,

In command prompt use the command “netstat -aon” to check if the port is actually opened.
If you see something like this, a port is open:

Proto Local Address Foreign Address State PID
          TCP LISTENING 1040

If it is running open the firewall to that port:
You can use the PID number and cross-check in task manager on which program that opened that port.

You can also start the installation procedure again and try to install Adito to another port, for instance 4443.
If it is running on that port it probably collide with IIS.

Let me know of you findings πŸ™‚

          1. Hi my friend,

unfortunately port is not used, installation goes and finishes fine
but no way to see adito listening on 443 port.

Running with java returns no error but also I cannot see adito listening on port 443.

          2. Try to reinstall java jre ( and reinstall Adito again on another port (above 1024, for instance 4443).
At the end select ONLY the adapter that has IPv4 support and remove the “all Interfaces”.

If that still doesn’t work I’ll setup a VM with W2k8 R2 and give you feedback about my findings πŸ™‚

          3. Hi Fedrico,

I’ve just installed successfully Adito on a Windows 2008 VM (Image, straight from M$: SW_DVD5_Windows_Svr_DC_Ent_Std_2008_English_x64_MLF_X14-26714.iso ).
W2k8 came fresh out-of-the-box through the easy-installer from VMware and I installed by right-clicking as administrator on Java and Adito.
Note: No roles or other objects was added

The protection-mode in Internet Explorer was a little pain.
You had to press “Add” on “safe sites” to ensure that you could run eg javascript (which is required).

The service installed correctly and started as expected.
I had to open the port 443 (in the firewall) to enable service for other computers.

The procedure is pretty much equal to any other Windows version I’ve installed Adito on, so I don’t see why it doesn’t work for you.
Did you try to installed on another port?

            Cheers. Lars

          4. Hi Lars,

sorry but I was away and I read your post/email now.

So glad to know that it works πŸ™‚

In the meanwhile I tried to install on Ubuntu server 11.04 and I noticed
that at the end of web wizard there is a part “of startup” that I did not see
under Win2k8 and, for sure, was due to IE protection mode.

            Ok, you are great !

Now, I don’t know if leave Ubuntu vm up & running with Adito or shut it down
            and go back to Win.

In any case, thank you very very much.

Just a question : are you so skill also in web forward configuration over adito ?

            Bye :))

  48. Hi a nob here just got my self to learn a thing or two about vpn and stuck here (what a great idea Adito) and by all means a great job by you for the installer πŸ™‚
Any way my problem looks like this (will try a few things by my self)

    Generated servlet error:
    C:\Program Files\Adito SVN R706\tmp\org\apache\jsp\WEB_002dINF\jsp\layouts\ cannot access java.lang.Object

    Generated servlet error:

public final class layout_jsp extends org.apache.jasper.runtime.HttpJspBase

Any help would be much appreciated
Ps Java 8 installed not 7 will try to change that !

    1. Hi,

This issue is directly related to Java 8 and their security changes in that version.
For now; Adito only works with Java 7.
I have tried to recompile with ant on java 8 without any love from java.
Still investigating what causes the error, but I cannot manage to get it running myself.
New version will be released when fixed.

      Regards. Lars

  49. Hi Lars

First thank you for this soft, i use it for a long time now.
Today since Java 8 we are not able to use Adito anymore. So i uninstalled JAVA 8 et reinstalled JaVA 7 on server and client.
But it doesn’t work anymore and i have 80 employees who cannot connect to their remote server.
If you find a solution for the JAVA 8 issue, it would be great, please inform us πŸ˜‰

    Regards, Franck

    1. Hi Franck,

As stated before, never use Adito in production! πŸ™‚
I’ll let everyone know if I’m able to get Adito to run on Java 8, I have trouble recompiling it. So it will takes some time.

      Regards. Lars

  50. Hi Lars,

Do you have any idea to increase session timeout inactivity for web forwarding ?

Actually idle session are closed after 5 minutes
